- BumpyroadExplorerOh another thought, I would not want a hard wired unit unless it had a bypass feature.

Those plug-in units do absolutely nothing to protect against undervoltage or overvoltage (such as a 30A RV outlet miswired for 240V), will not protect the hardwired and expensive appliances in the RV, and frankly are of rather limited use for surges that they claim to protect from.
The overvoltage and undervoltage protection of the RV "surge guard" type of units is IMHO their most valuable feature. I suspect you're more likely to toast your microwave, converter, A/C, etc. due to a miswired or malfunctioning power pedestal than from a surge in the electrical grid.
The most common problem in CGs is under voltage from A/C units running. My Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C hard wired 30amp unit shuts me down many times because of under voltage. Once it shut me down for over voltage from a dropped neutral.
I just traded in my 2009 Jayco Eagle for a 2015 Jayco Eagle. Before the actual trade, I removed my Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C and installed it in my new TT before I did anything else. - BumpyroadExplorer

I am considering a surge protector for my rv, 30 amp service, my question is they seem very expensive at rv stores. Can they be bought somewhere else for less money?
don't waste your money on a $90 special. spend $250 and up for a MULTIFUNCTIONsurge protector.
bumpy - dbatesExplorerI'd 2x the motion for Progressive but figure out which unit you think you want then Google it. You can find the least expensive source for each model. It’s not unusual to be able to find prices below manufacturer’s suggested retail or dealer prices. Just remember to check shipping costs before you buy.
Click HERE to see comparison charts for SurgeGuard and Progressive units plus remember that Progressive has an excellent reputation for customer service.

FWIW, you can also use the home type that people put on individual devices.

I agree but they are good for spikes from equipment being turned on and off and storm related causes.
They are better than nothing especially during a storm. - TOOBOLDExplorerI bought one off of Ebay about a year ago for $175 30 amp. I guess I should mention it is a Progressive Industries.

Not my ad and I have one but not for sale
