Suspension squeak

The suspension on my trailer has started to squeak a lot. It squeaks when driving and when walking in the trailer with out the jacks down. Is it a problem and can I lub it somehow. I have dexter axles.

  • I use Belray motorcycle chain wax in a spray can on a lot of things that squeak. It goes on thin and penetrates then sets up to a waxy/grease consitstancy that won't fling off or wash out. Just don't put it on your stabilizer screws or they will back themselves off under load. I spray it directly on the leaf spring bolts and leaf springs at contact points.
  • Leaf springs are bad about squeaks and other things. I'd pull and clean them, paint and then install the urethane strips designed to go between the individual springs and new clamps and urethane bushings.
Better yet have perches installed and coil springs and trailing arms and shocks. Then.... maybe not.
  • If your feeling real cheap and don't have a can of PB Blaster handy, any spray can of Cooking Oil (PAM i.e.) will do the same thing till you can get the Wet Bolts installed.
  • The plastic inserts on springs wear out. They are usually replaceable. Some inserts require more work than others. If you're not sure have a reputable shop complete the work. It will likely be expensive.

I use PB Blaster instead of WD-40. It is a much better lubricant as WD-40 is more designed for water displacement than lubrication.

  • Dexter sells a "wet bolt" kit to solve this problem... basically it replaces the attachment hardware for your suspension, so you can inject grease.

if I ever do the axle flip on mine, I'll do the wet bolts too... someday ;)

I don't know how you'd grease the suspension without wet bolts, I just put up with the squeaking, it's kind of funny the noises it makes rolling slow along a poorly maintained camp ground road.
