My last trip was the first time I removed my equal-i-zer bars for traveling down a dirt road. I didn't want the dips in the road to cause too much stress on the receiver bars.
To answer your question, I would remove the bars if backing where the rear of the trailer has to go up a substantial slope. I would not remove the bars for backing sharply to the left or right.
