I'm just a long weekend camper about 5-6 times a year.. 2 20's and I usually have to replace one of them during the season.
I use the auto switch over valve. Since I always check the tanks before leaving and when getting home, I've not been left totally empty in over 14 years of doing this.
I also carry a 3rd 20# for use with the camp stove/BBQ/fire pit, so even if I did find myself short, I'd have at least that, plus the convenience of swapping if I absolutely had to.. I'd refill first however.
The only time I choose to swap is when the tanks get near their expire time, swap it for a newer one and only pay like $20 and I'm good for another 10+ years (depending on the age of the swapped tank.. I look first and only take them if they are no more than 2 years old if that's all they got.. )
