I moved from 40# to 20# bottles a couple of years ago; We were camping in NC over the Christmas holidays and ran out of propane. Could not find an open place to refill within reasonable distance. Went to WallM and bought a 20# bottle and we were set.
I have 2 20# bottles, so when one is empty, I exchange it immediately. Never run out since - you can find 20# bottles everywhere.
I'm guessing that I use 6 bottles/year, so the smaller bottle capacity is not an issue.
