When I use an extension cord on my RV power cord, I tape the gap between the socket and plug with electrical tape, to keep moisture out. Am I wasting time and tape? Is there a better way to protect the connection?

Are you talking about moisture or water? It's of course always better to keep anything electrical out of water, especially if it's upstream of a GFI.

Depends on what kind of weather and how long it's going to be there.

If it lets you sleep better at night go for it IMO.. :)If you worry about the extra time/tape being used, don't do it.. ;)Personally, I wouldn't worry about it or do it.. I used to do that for my homes Xmas decoration connections and found that it actually TRAPPED more moisture and corroded the connections MORE doing that... You might want to replace the whole cord to keep it "code", otherwise just replace the plug...it's easy to do. Replace the cord
