We full time so never have enough time to 'visit' with the grandkids. That said, we invite our two oldest to share their summer vacations with us. Their parents fly them to wherever we are, they travel with us for the summer and we fly them home when school is ready to start. We've done this now for 6 years. Thinking they were not going to want to spend time with the old farts this year, (they're 14, girl and 15, boy) we were planning on tripping it alone. Foolish me, they're with us now...:B...said they look forward to the trips.
We allow internet connections in the early evening, just before dinner and an hour or so before they retire. This seems to give them their 'fix'. Imagine, if you will, YOU not being able to get on RV.Net...:B !
Finally, what we do, YMMV, is allow THEM to choose what we are going to do. For instance, one year they wanted to see State Capitols...we visited 10. Another year they wanted to swim in all the Great Lakes..we did the circle tour. Last year they wanted to visit Disney World Orlando, (they're from Ca.) We had the parents come for that and we babysat the younger ones while mom n dad took the older ones to the parks.
Time to sit down with the kids and ask them what they want to do. When we're at the park, we look for swimming pools and basketball courts. I carry a basketball, soccer ball and football in the coach. (deflated when the kids are gone) You'd be surprised at how many times they 'fit in' at the pool meeting other kids as bored as they are. Meet those kids parents and if ok let the teens go exploring together. Ours look forward to walks in the woods, but I make it interesting by talking with them as we walk, pointing out things they might not see.
One other eye opening thing I discovered a few years ago. I bought each kid a camera, not necessary now because of the cell phone cameras and encouraged them to take pictures of things they saw as we traveled. We put those in a folder with the year taken to view later. (you don't want to see 'all' the pictures on their phones..:W) Looking at their pictures gives you a better idea of what is of interest to THEM. This allows you to better plan the next trip. Once they discover there's more than video games and internet chats they will come out of hiding and enjoy life....Dennis
