Teenagers getting bored

I have 2 teens, 16 and 15.....when we go camping all they do is lay around because they have no internet for their games or youtube videos. Any good ideas for something I can do or bring to occupy them or should I leave them at home?
  • Dallas Steve agrees with Seattle Steve - ask them what they'd like to do and enjoy the childhood years you have left. Mine just graduated from high school and I'm feeling a little melancholy. If you do go camping with them there are many video games that don't require Internet connections. Maybe they can bring those along. If you have room for a couple of dirt bikes or a 4-wheeler they might be badgering you to go camping next weekend. Actually I want to go now.
  • How about some internet/tech time during the day?

Cutting off "tech kids" from all of it does not do anyone any good these days.

When this started happening with mine I ended up bring along the xbox for short stints and allowed internet access for chat/facebook etc through my mobile hotspot. Once they had access to there online friends for a short period during the day they got their "fix" and where happy the rest.

A little give and take worked for me and I can still get them to come on occasion still ;)
  • We taught our kids how to do things in the woods.
    - Starting a fire without matches or with wet wood, how to keep it going when it is raining.
    - took them on the hiking trails. Reading animal tracks.
    - Of coarse many types of fishing,
    - Get a survival book and learn what can be eaten, how to sanitize water.
    - A fun thing can be get a compass and set up a coarse they need to follow.
    - There are also these days GPS games called geo..games. all over the US people have hidden things. You go to the geo game of your choice look for things in your area, when you find it you sign it and rehide it for the next person to find.
    - We have a croquet set and horse shoe set. We setup the croquet through the trees for a challenging obstacle coarse.

We did a lot of these when they were babies, into their teens and now they are in their 30's and we still go out. They have picked up that and show their friends and their friends kids the same time.

    Good luck and have fun!
  • Buy some 'water soaker guns'.
When they look bored........soak them down
This will usually get their attention and could be the start of a fun filled family water war game.

Take them on a hike and show them the different vegetation/birds etc. Engage them in learning about nature.

And when all else fails........'Get up, get out, get going...'

    Leaving 2 teens 15 & 16 home alone.....hahahahaha
  • I can remember as a teen camping and being bored....in some campgrounds.

The campgrounds with swimming, boating, basketball/volleyball or other game facilities were where we had the most fun. Bicycles, planned hikes or tours of local points of interest also help.

Kayaking or Standup Paddle Boards(SUPs) are popular if there is water nearby. These both come in inflatable versions for easy transport.

If we were able to bring friends along those were the best trips.
  • That's highly individual and depends greatly on their other interests. I would suggest trying to camp somewhere that has quick access to things you can do together. Do they like to hike? Fish, swim, boating? Etc, etc.

If they're not into any of the outdoorsy stuff, you may have a tough row to hoe.

There's also camping in more developed areas that give access to more touristy sight seeing stuff. Kind of a bridge the gap type of thing.
  • Perhaps you're looking at it the wrong way. They obviously don't look forward to camping. Rather than forcing them to do something you enjoy, why not ask them what they want to do? You'll only have them in the house for a few more years. Make the most of it.

Plenty of time for you to camp after they move on with their lives.
