the adjustable tow bars aren't magic - ya still gotta get close, but you don't have to be as precise to be "on the ball".
I lay the bar (collapsed) on the ground and then find some kinda marker (that i can see from the driver seat of the towed)....you can use a stick, pebble, rock or bit of trash to mark how close you need to get....it doesnt have to be precise...leave a little distant....because you'll be able to extend the tow bar to meet the dinghy.
if the arms and releases are LOCKED or binding - sit in the towed vehicle and crank the steering wheel from lock to lock - these will help to unbind the locks.
