My smart meter has a digital display. Yes it can be read by anyone.
Easier to use the electric company website that gives a daily tally, graph of usage by the hour and estimate for the next bill.
That would be cool. I think it will be awhile, if ever, that we get something like that around here.
I once called my local electric company to see if they could do a energy audit at my house. They didn't even know what I was talking about and they laughed at me.
My last water heater quit. It was 70 gallons. The electric company sold the landlord a new one, cheap. It is suppose to be more efficient then the last one. The new one is 110 gallons! I called them up and said "I'm a bachelor and I live in a 2 bedroom one bath house I could never use that much hot water!" They said that they bought these water heaters in a batch and they did not have a smaller ones available . The new water heater is so big they had to put it in a different place. It radiates so much heat into the pipes above that that I have to run my cold water in my kitchen sink for 90 seconds just to get a cold drink of water.
It doesn't seem all that efficient to me.
Electric company's are in the business to sell electricity. The more electricity you waste the more money they make. That's all they care about.
