$30,000 Replacement battery for a $10,000 EV Volt
https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/dealership-quotes-30-000-to-replace-battery-in-a-10-000-chevrolet-volt/ar-AA11hHuE?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=0dbef53ffc6d9573d3b1598778794747
Yah it’s goofy. First the dealer used the wrong part number. New batteries haven’t been available for volts for 5 years so although the number isn’t wrong it’s not the right number.
The correct number is a 9100 dollar reman battery. Which makes sense as why would someone put a new battery in a 12 year old car.
Anyway, GM parts online sells the reman part number battery for 6700 dollars. A couple third party shops have estimated 6 to 8 hours labour.
As well there are batteries from written off bolts for 3500 to 4000 dollars.
And the original battery is probably still good so someone will want to buy it and rebuild it. More than likely a bad cell or a balancing board.
Anyway the 30’000 dollar battery replacement story turned out to be about a quarter or less than that. Great story though.
Most of my cars and trucks I try to keep 15-20 years.
Yah nothing wrong with that. Most EV batteries will outlast the car. No idea what happened to the volt battery but I’m not up on older hybrid batteries. Newer tesla batteries are expected to last between 400,00 to 600,000 kilometres. Lots of old Tesla cabs on the road with north of 400,000 kilometres.
