Testing Drinking Water

Gordonthree's post is absolutely correct.

Filters that retain bacteria need to have a size cutoff of around 0.2 microns to stop bacteria. Laboratories use Millipore filters of 0.22 microns to sterilize water and media used for culturing bacteria and cells. However, they are used in specialized, sterile glassware and are ONLY USED ONCE.

Those filters do not remove viruses. Intense UV irradiation does.

The same could be said of the pipes at the plant that bottles the water you buy. Bacteria doesn't grow in a pipe if you don't put bacteria contaminated water into the pipe.

I sanitize my rv with 1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons in the tank fill the lines then let it sit over night. Drain refill and flush. However we never drink from it. I have yet to see backflow preventers in cg's so you really dont know what germs are coming from some dude 12 sites over. An example was the guy next to us last year. He parked set up then also connected his black tank flush to water line on the mast. Disgusting.

I dont know about you but im not going to drink his S**t. We always bring bottled and I use a large whole house filter that I install in line from the cg to the rig.

We full-timed for 16 years and got our tank water from various sources. We used our tank water for everything, including drinking.

Public parks have their water tested regularly. We've volunteered at them and have seen it.

We've never sanitized our tank. We used high quality filters on the water before it hits the tank.

I guess what everyone is missing here is not the water quality as it comes from the campground, but it is the water lines in the rv. they are dark inside and never really dry because you turn them off at the faucet and at the incoming site, so bacteria builds up in those pipes. If its all the same to you folks, I don't want to drink that.

I just read yesterday that half a good many States are now finding Teflon in their water, another carcinogen. Also once I read that the Great Lakes are being contaminated by by the little beads that whiten teeth. So yuck
I know that my little town has great water as it has a new well and brand new pipes, so we fill up before we go and take our water with us.
Do I trust corporate American to keep me healthy. NO, I don't. They will cut corners to save money and buyer beware.

Threads about drinking water, chemicals and cooties always cause me to recall the rants of Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper, USAF. That man knew a lot of about the dangers of contaminated water.

Sounds wonderful, but simply not true. Many harmful organisms can be kept out by the skin, but if ingested can make you very ill. Giardia immediately comes to mind, also hepatitis.

Exactly, just because you can get away with doing all the above doesn't mean it is always safe to drink.
