Testing for “off road” or “red dye” diesel?

Having engine work done on Dodge Cummins for possible fuel restriction or lack of fuel problem. The garage has had to do several “bucket” tests. Probably 15 up to 25 gallons of “red dye” diesel has been put through the engine. They have been using “red dye” diesel from a real big irrigation pump, that has its own engine on a trailer, that is falling apart.

I have never been checked or “dipped” for off road fuel before and never worried about it, that is until now that I have some red dye.

Currently in Yuma, AZ and worry about being checked before I get back home in WA and wonder how long time wise or miles before I no longer have worry about it.

Question:
How long does red dye stay in system, until no longer detectable?
Is there a way to “cover” myself just in case? Pic's of bucket tests or print out fuel receipts on credit card statement?

I know my odds are slim of getting checked but also think my state has penalty of $10.00 per every gallon of fuel capacity you have. Don't know about other states I have to go through (CA and OR)

Maybe I don't have to worry at all. Because when fixed, I'll be back on my own fuel tank. But also read somewhere the enforcement folks don't "dip" the tank anymore and they have something they shove up your exhaust pipe. Sort of like an emission test.

  • I have been using a diesel pickup for 14 years and have never been checked.
  • I seriously wouldn't worry about it at all. The odds of being checked are very, very low, and even if it did happen, you could easily fight the citation by explaining what happened. Just be sure to leave the garage with a full tank of non-dyed fuel and save the receipts for the work.
  • You are screwed! I would be screaming jumping up and down at the shop that was that stupid. If they have red dye through out your system figure about ten tanks to flush the residue.
The revenue guys have NO sense of humor about dyed fuel.
Stay far away from sale barns and farm auctions as Dot frequents both dipping tanks. Also avoid hauling your lawn equipment.
  • Think I'd be concerned about “red dye diesel from a real big irrigation pump, that has its own engine on a trailer, that is falling apart."

Are you sure the fuel was good and clean. Sounds like a good way to get algae started. Good luck.
