First of all, for most of us, it's about what you can afford.
Secondly, it's about what size and style you want.
Thirdly, it's about how unrealistic it is to discuss this subject as if the size and style you really want is made with BOTH types of engine, gas and diesel.
The differences between gas and diesel engines, and the reason for the difference, is well known (documented ad nauseam).
Me? The engine type and its torque specs, for my big motorhome, was a no-brainer. I first selected the size and features of the motorhome, and I already knew that I always select the engine choice with the highest torque spec (1050 lbs in this case). And, for my toad, I wanted a specific brand SUV and size, with the features I had to have (including a torky straight 6 engine), plus it had to be gas. Motorhome and toad, I consider both as "work" vehicles. For our run-around town car, I wanted a certain medium-size 4x4 SUV of a certain brand, with a V-6 high-reving engine with at least a 6-speed tranny.
If you know what you want, and why,.....the choices are limited. It's not as if GMC will build you a custom made vehicle for an affordable price.
