Interesting about the hostility mentioned towards Californians by both OR and WA residents. I lived in CA back in the mid-1970's and there was hostility even back then (I remember certain bumper stickers on Oregon cars). Hopefully, they won't hate Texans too much. I lived in Seattle for a year back in 1988 and am fairly familiar with the area, though I really only know the Olympic Peninsula from day trips with my family and taking the Black Ball Ferry to Victoria.
I'd toyed with the idea of taking SH 97 to I-84. I've driven I-84 in my car but it was nearly 20 years ago and I don't really remember much of it.
I'm ultimately planning on staying in Port Angeles for about two months and plan to do a lot of hiking and even some back-packing (a friend recommended the Hoh River trail to the Blue Glacier). Even though my bodies 66 years old, I just can't seem to wrap my head around or accept those numbers!
