What the OP needs is a routing software program where you can put in the route that YOU want to go, not the one that the GPS wants. We use DeLorme on our computer before the trip and we also stay off interstates so we map scenic roads. We're in the West most of the time so we also use the Benchmark series of gazeteers which are excellent map for the back country. They show public lands and campgrounds and many scenic roads that typical U.S. map books don't show. These are gazeteers for each individual state and they're very easy to read. Then the map is transferred to the Garmin which the driver uses.
