My Garmin Nuvi does the same thing. It drives me nuts. I guess it would be useful if there weren't large signs on the highway telling me which lanes I need to be in to stay on the highway I am on.

When I come up to a merge where there are several lanes my GPS just pops up a picture of all the lanes and an arrow in the one I need to stay in.
After listening to all the problems everyone seems to have with garmin and all the necessary excessive yammering some of these GPS have, again, glad I have a TomTom! :C
