I am always amazed by the amount of worry folks express about their gear being stolen. How many have actually, personally had something stolen while camping? Please restrict yourselfs to person...

I'm not paranoid about having stuff stolen but I do use diligence in keeping most of my stuff secure. My thought is it won't keep the crooks away but will keep the honest people honest.
That said, a lot of our gear is worn out so crooks would get what they deserve.
You must not get out much! :B I am 45 and have heard since I was a kid.
I've heard it all my life too. Perhaps a southern thing....
