Tinnitus and hearing aids?

I have tinnitus and noise-cancelling hearing aids, and they work! The aids create a subtle background white noise that alleviates the annoying hissing I constantly hear. The brand is Xino by Starkey Hearing Technologies.

Why would they you ask? Well it is fairly accepted that certain noises can block other noises. Kind of like the "white noise" thing. You should be able to find some info on studies at the American Tinnitus Assn web page. And while your there, check out their Sound Mixer Page, to find a sound that helps to create your own soothing sound palette to block the noises we can't get away from!

Crickets??? Mine sound like "spring peepers". I use to enjoy hearing real spring peepers peeping out in the fields. But now I hear them all the time. Never go away. Hear them over the sound of the TV, which I leave on all the time for the noise. And it can be very, very, annoying! Can't say I wasn't warned, but was not offered a solution to what cause the tinnitus. Thanks to a military contract and Hughes Tool. Can't say that Howard Hughes didn't leave me anything.

My brother has a lot of trouble with this too. His doctor said to lay off alcohol, coffee and chocolate as they can aggravate it. I should mention the use of hearing aides to him. He has even been feeling off balance because of it.

My hearing aids create white background noise to mask the "crickets". From what I have been told you will never get rid of the crickets but you can mask it. Mine hill my hearing a bit and sooth (mask) the high pitch. They are not perfect but they help. With noise like driving or watching TV they help me hear and I notice no crickets. When there is no noise the white noise from the aids kick in and distracts from the cricket buzz.

Hearing aids, so far haven't alleviated the constant buzzing. They help overcome it a bit but some things I cannot hear.
Much of the time if I don't think about it I don't notice it. It has gotten more insistent since the infection about three years ago and harder to ignore.
There may be something out there that can be done for it?????
I'd sure like to know.

My crickets are not that bad yet and don't notice them with my hearing aids in. Find a good hearing aid specialist. One that will let you try out the hearing aids for 30 to 60 days before purchase. During that 30 to 60 days go back often for readjustments if you think it's needed.

Another guy with tinnitus here. No crickets... just continuous high pitch. I have not been to a hearing aid person but it's definitely time. Are hearing aid trials common? If not, can you recommend a national company that does trials of equipment? Costco, maybe? Any suggestions will be most appreciated. I think I'm really getting on DW nerves because of my incessant "what's that?" and I'd love to fix it for her.

I would suggest calling around to check places that offer trial periods. Some may charge a small fee if you end up not buying them, others will not. My preference is the behind the ear style vs in the ear. But it all boils down to what works for you. I've had hearing aids for over 15 years. Number one after getting them is don't be afraid to make all the trips back you need to to get them adjusted right. Take note of conditions when your aids don't seem to be doing what you expect of them. It may sound strange, but I found the best way to test my hearing aids is to watch the Wheel of Fortune show on TV to see if you are hearing the letters correctly. You may be surprised at what you think you hear.

I am nearing that point also and have doing a lot of reading about it. From what I get the best results come from going to an ear, nose, and throat doctor, someone trained medically to analyze the problem and determine the proper course of action.
