Hearing aid chargers.....boondocking

You would think that with 20+ chargers in our possession, that at least ONE of them would work!!!!!! I have a Rexton charger for my hearing aides. We will be boondocking for the next 6 months or so. I really prefer using the rechargeable batteries over buying batteries (even though they're not all that expensive). We went to Costco and asked about a 12-volt converter (?)......they ordered one. Turns out they ordered the kind for overseas type of charging. Does not convert 120 to 12 volt.....or 12 volt to 120. I've tried every cable in the house....the ones that DO fit, do not turn the charger on!!!!! Has anyone else run into this?????????? What did you do?????

  • True traveylin. We have 1 cell phone, 2 Kindles, 1 laptop, my CPAP machine. We have BIG solar panels. GPS will charge in the pickup. No walkie-talkies.... Flashlights are battery. I think we'll be okay. We went 11 days with solars, and never drained even down to 75%. But for the long haul.....this will be interesting!!!!!! and FUN!
  • Boon docking for 6 months in today's electronic driven enviorment, you will very likely have occasion to need some 120 volt power to recharge some device when running the generator is either not desired or costly, Gallon per hour translates to 4 $ per hour . Having an inverter to convert battery storage 12 volt to 120 volt will be considered useful for gps, cellphone, walkie talkie, hearing aid, flash lite, ipad etc
  • smkettner......we didn't even leave the store with it :) :)
I imagine the pure sine wave inverter IS what I need.....however, at that price, I can buy a LOT of batteries (at $8.00 for 40!! -- that's 20 weeks for $8.00) :) :) Guess I'll give and buy the tossers......

    Thanks everyone.
  • Thanks, Desert Captain.....we'll work on it tomorrow ......DH is asleep, but I believe he DID try his inverter.....:)
  • I charge mine with a 250watt inverter that I have had for 20 years. Just plug it into the cigarette lighter outlet or the two ino one (eleven bucks at Walmart& includes a USB charger).
  • We'll try radio shack. We do have a 12V DC to 12V AC inverter.......but it didn't turn the charger on!!!!!! Maybe it WOULD be easier to buy batteries..LOL
  • Radio Shack might have something for you; if you take the charger in and show it to them, they might have an adapter. But like KD4UPL said, a little portable 12V DC to 120V AC inverter should do the job, just with a little extra power wasted (going from 12V to 120V back to 12V).
  • If you can't find a 12v charger (which is the best solution) you can use a small inverter to power your normal 120v AC charger. Depending on how sensitive the electronics in the charger are a pure sine wave inverter would probably be recommended. I don't know how many watts your charger uses but it can't be much. I would guess that the smallest pure sine wave inverter would work fine for you. It would plug into a cigarette lighter outlet.
Samlex makes a 150w unit that should work but there are others.
