Tips on acclimating the family to longer road trips

We had four children in a station wagon. Each had a tray to use as a table. Each had a small bag full of things to do. I leaned I had to go thru the bag because what they packed did not necessarily work as things to do while traveling. Talked about the areas we were going thru so hopefully they learned something.
They had maps if they were old enough to mark where we were going.
