I've seen what sunlight can do to cars, exteriors and interirors. I've seen discoloration, cracking, etc. I can imagine the same thing will occur to tires. Can "I" prove it ... Nope. But a little common sense and reasoning tells me it's worth covering them up. If someone can prove that it doesn't then I have a peace of mind for penny's in cost.
I even pull the blinds and cover the windshield with that reflective bubble stuff when in storage.
