Tire rotation - what's best for towing?

Have 15,000 miles on a set of Firestone Transforce ATs. Rotated them at 7,500 miles and thought it time to do it again. Rear tires have more tread left than the front. I tow a 36' 5th wheel. Would it be better to leave the tires with more tread on the rear due to weight of 5th wheel over rear axel or go ahead and rotate the rears to the front?

Tires are in good condition. Just wondering where best to keep the extra rubber. Thanking you in advance for your responses.
  • I have a 3500 Ram diesel longbed and run 80# in rear tires and 74# in front while towing. 74# is something I pulled out of the air because I wasn't sure what I should be running in front while towing. I run 60# all the way around when not towing.

I've only recently been towing the 5th wheel. About 2,500 total miles. The rest of the mileage has been used towing a TT with a 1,000# of tongue weight. Same air pressure used for that setup.

The difference in tread ware is noticeable to me because I'm looking for it but maybe not so if you were just casually or mildly interested (kind of a stupid sentence).

My fronts lose tread faster than the rears - mostly due to limited slip rear end and tight turning with local driving from what I can tell.

smokeylew, how much of a tread difference is there?

If only replacing two tires, they should always go on the rear axle.

x2 rear is better for control. You can steer the front tires, you cannot steer sliding rear tires.

As to original OP question. Leave the good tread on the rear. I always lose more tread on the rear tires so I am curious how you are pulling a 5er and keeping the tread on the rear and losing it on the front.

    Different composition of tires?

If you were to purchase 2 new tires they would be installed on Front (recommended)
Best thread goes up front for steering control etc.

  • What air pressure are you using ?
    Fronts?
    Rears when towing?

I run 60# up front all the time (diesel)
    I run 80# rear/towing (14K 5vr----3000# pin weight)
    I run 50# rear/non-towing

Easily get 60K on tires and I rarely rotate tires.
