To leak or not to leak (Slide Out Stories)

Please share your electric slide out leak issues also if your slides never leaked along with model and year of the camper. Also when the slide started leaking and how bad it was. This may help others in new purchases as we find out together what brands leak the fastest and worst and the ones that don't.
Thanks TecheMan

  • Ours has never leaked. Sorry, not the doom and gloom story your looking for but probably more common.

If I were buying a rig with slide-outs, I'd take a look into Solera's (part of Lippert's) slide sleeve. They have a topper, but the sleeve covers the sides as well, preventing water entry no matter how worn the slide seals are. I've not used it first-hand, but it looks to be a decent solution for leaky slides.
I saw the videos on that product and may get it if and when a leak occurs but the camper I want has a skylight on the slide.
    Thanks TecheMan

  • When we purchased our MH (used) it had a leak in the bedroom slide. Dealer tried to correct the problem without any luck.
I pulled the slide in and just studied the mating surfaces for quite a while....all of a sudden it became clear where and why there was a leak. A tiny bit of silicone and a strip of duct tape and no more leak....its lasted over 8 years. I do have to be honest and say we don't spend much time fulltiming in rainy parts of the country.
  • Trail-Lite no slide leaks
    Fleetwood Prowler no slide leaks
    Komfort w/2slides no slide leaks
  • It may seem like a common problem but I think you'll find a majority of RV'ers don't even post on RV related forums. Most people come to these forums for an answer or need. So if you take the posts at face value you'll find the majority of problems with RVs are: Battery issues, holding tank guage failures, what toilet paper to use, where to put the cat litter pan, what can I tow with a ________, roof leaks and slideout leaks to mention some of the more common.

Our 5th wheel has two slideouts, it was built in 1994 with no leaks. Ours was one of the first manufacturers to add slideouts so you can rest assured the slideout technology has been improving since 1994. Leaks are rare on well maintained RVs.

You have to take into consideration only about 1/4 of the RVer population posts on sites like these. So the problems you see are more likely exceptions to the norm.
  • My 2005 CC has three slides and have never experienced a leak around the slide seals, even in 80 MPH wind/rain storms.
  • As far as i know it is not an issue. I've had 2 TT's with slides and no leaks! If you read it on the internet it is not necessarily true. I wouldn't have another trailer without a slide. My next RV will have atleast 2!
  • No any camper with a electric slide out. I am in the market for a travel trailer and hear this is a issue on many brands and just trying to find out how common it may be among certain brands.
  • I noticed you have what I term a tent trailer. Is that the type of RV your eluding to?
