Toilet bowl seal and months of storage

I am speaking about the seal that is in the actual toilet bowl preventing the contents of toilet from going down the pipe.

So, in the past we noticed that it wasn't holding water and did the olive oil thing to rejuvenate that seal/it worked...and will do it again in our trailer as it is not holding water again...about a year later.

Is there something we should be doing while it is not being used...in summer FILL the bowl with water (and check it which we didn't)...we only put an inch or so in before the summer. Or olive oilor what?

Winter? Have some rv antifreeze sitting in it (our motorhome on this one).

  • Olive oil (non petroleum product) will make the seal flexible.......it's only an old wives tale is from those that have not used it.

Granted a worn out seal is a worn out seal......and will have to be replaced.

Cleaning the seal & ball/blade valve goes a long way to keep seals usable.

While in storage olive oil will help keep seal wet, lubed, pliable and doesn't evaporate.

I pour in olive oil to cover the seal area, about a cupful, and leave it for a few days about once a year. Never had a problem with any rv losing water or anti-freeze during long storage periods.

That's the whole point of putting oil on it to start with. To give the seal a little more time before having to be replaced.

  • Olive oil is an old wives tale. It just puts a coating on the seal and facilitates its operation for a while longer, but it does not rejuvenate any seal.

Once the seal has rotted, it must be replaced. Once it is replaced, you can place some RV safe anti-freeze in the toilet bowl during your winterization.
  • Unsure what you're asking here.

Always put water in the bowl - about 3" or more if it's going to be stored without being checked frequently.

Yes, you can store it with RV Anti-freeze (Pink Stuff) instead of water if you want to.

Olive Oil is probably the best "conditioner" for the seal itself.

    Hope this helps,
