Olive oil (non petroleum product) will make the seal flexible.......it's only an old wives tale is from those that have not used it.
Granted a worn out seal is a worn out seal......and will have to be replaced.
Cleaning the seal & ball/blade valve goes a long way to keep seals usable.
While in storage olive oil will help keep seal wet, lubed, pliable and doesn't evaporate.
