Toilet seat removal

Hello,

In our 2003 Jayco 5th wheel, we have your basic white generic Thetford toilet. We last had the trailer out for the Labor Day weekend, and we're getting it ready to head down the Ca. coast to Pismo Beach for the Thanksgiving holiday.

I stopped by the storage facility where I keep it, and noticed the plastic seat cover was down. Not a big deal, but generally, cover is left up once I finish cleaning it. When I lifted the cover, I noticed the inside of the cover and the seat were discolored, and I was wondering what could have caused that. We've had this trailer for 10 years, and the cover, seat, and toilet itself are all original.

I haven't decided if I'm going to replace it, but in case I do, does anyone know how to do this, or can point me to a youtube video? it appears the seat and cover are hinged on somehow, but it's hard to determine how to remove and replace since I don't see any bolts.

tks…

  • Thanks for the info. I'll try the method described in the FAQ section, as I'm pretty sure the seat and cover are hinged on. There are no screws like the seats in my home. I use a biodegradable product to clean the toilet and for waste break-down.
  • On most toilet seats, the hinges have pop-up covers (rectangular or trapezoidal) you open up with a screwdriver. Once you've popped them open, there's a large slotted-head nylon screw that you can take out with the screwdriver. The nuts under the toilet bowl rim usually have an ear that stops them turning while you're taking out the screw.

Regular "round" (not "extended" or "elliptical") domestic toilet seats fit RV toilets.

Our seat lid broke during our spring trip to Oregon. I replaced it with a domestic seat from Lowe's - took all of 15 minutes to remove the old seat, clean off the top of the toilet and install the new one.
  • Krylon makes a terrific White Spray Paint made specifically for painting plastic. If you use a toilet tank chemical that contains formaldehyde it can discolor plastic. Switch to a enzyme based digester type.
