Too wide? Legal Width Restrictions

Very recently I came across a Coachmen brochure which mentioned that some states restrict access on some or all roads to vehicles which are 96" or less in width. Looking into this further I found a document that listed 22 states (by my count) which restrict vehicles to 96" in width on non-designated roads. Tennessee restricts vehicles to 96" in width on all roads.

My newly acquired Coachmen Freelander 30 QB is 100" in width. So I'm wondering what real world concerns I should have.

Has anybody ever been ticketed for having a vehicle that is too wide? Has anybody ever had their vehicle measured? Has anybody been forced to have their RV towed out of a state where they were in violation of the law or been told to drive to the nearest border?

Is this something I should be concerned about or should I not worry about it as I plan my cross country voyage?

Thanks.

    Just kidding.

There are plenty of other things one needs to be concerned about more so than your vehicle being a couple inches wider than allowed. I can't imagine anybody has ever been stopped. JMO
X 2...Who's going to notice an extra 2" on each side??

  • As you can see on my map I've been a few places. Never had a problem with my "wide-body" coach.
