Tool chest selection

I bought myself a tool chest for my 5th wheel. At Home Depot the chest (5 drawers) did not look that big when compared to the others on display. I got it home took it out of the box and put the box out for the trash man who at the time was coming down the street. The next day I put the tools from my small tool box into the drawers. Great so far. Then I took it out to the rv and put it on the slide out drawer that I had just built in the basement of my 5th wheel..........OMG was that thing huge......a whole lot larger than I had envisioned......It takes up twice the space as the box it replaced. Now to make a plan B. How do others manage their tools??
  • I did like Bobbo, except mine is a 201 piece kit from Stanley. I just grab a few other items like Channel Locks, vice grips and anything else that I would need that did not come with the Stanley kit. I have a small Stanley toolbox (similar to this one that fits everything else. I bring a cordless drill as well.

Most of the 201 piece kit is useless on the house, but since it is a motorhome, it might come in handy. Fortunately, I haven't had to use it for the motorhome yet.

  • I have a small box with a lift out lid and carry an assortment of tools, including nuts, bolts, lugs etc. the small items are put in old pill bottles. I have to keep an eye out for the tools I need clean the box out once-in-a while as the box has a tendency to accumulate items that are not needed. This tool box stays in the P/U.

I carry a small toolbox for a couple screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrench, and duct tape. If I need anything really complicated/large I buy it as needed. So far I haven't needed anything I don't have, and have saved myself trying to fit all the junk I don't need in a limited amount of space. That allows me to take the things I want to have, and do use on a regular basis.

All I ever needed was a sachel with pockets for basic tools. No hard corners so it can tuck in anywhere.

  • A few items like multi-bit screwdriver, pliers, knife and such is in the RV. Tool box is in the tow vehicle.
  • I have a cross bed box in my tuck. All tools plus other stuff goes in it. It's a chest type for 5th wheels.
  • The nice thing about drawer type tool boxes is the ability to organize the tools.

As you found out, it takes more room to organize tools.

I organized the tools that I carried on my quad by making PVC bottles that fit the canvas bag.
  • I use a surplus army/NATO cartrige box. It is water proof, handy and cheap.
  • I have a tool box that normally stays in the bed of the truck one side near the tailgate. When towing it is hidden by the 5er overhang. When not towing it is hidden by my locking roll type hard tonneau cover and locking tailgate.
  • I have this tool set from sears. I have added additional tools to it to make it more universal.
