Don't forget the Red Cross app for your smartphone, called Tornado. It monitors your location as you move, and it has a VERY loud siren that warns you of severe weather.
And Severe Weather is a good point to mention: a severe weather warning (as defined by the Nat'l Weather Service) means high winds exceeding 58 mph (sometimes higher speeds than a low-intensity tornado) and often hail. The storm cells that can create warned Severe Weather can drop a tornado, too; or just blast you with a Microburst. A line of severe cells can cause a Derecho (think "tornado on its side")
IMO, the Weather Underground app (free) is better than the Weather Channel app, which is loaded with advertising. But I LIKE the TV Weather Channel - any area that they define in red and start listing "Torcon Indexes" for, is an area to avoid if you can.
