Tow 1979 VW bus

I would like to tow my old VW bus when camping. Do I need supplemental breaks? Will this hurt my transaxle?(4 wheel down)I'm thinking about using the magnet type lights on the top of the bus. What else is needed for this set up. I know the bus is light but not sure of the real weight on this.

  • Towed my Baja Bug for 10K miles. It had a bus tranny in it. Never a problem. It weighed 1800lbs so never had a brake system. Ready brake is the cheapest way to go.
  • You can also get the wireless lights. Install a transmitter in your tow veh plug and turn on a switch on the light bar and you're ready to go. Magnets stick like glue.
Only negative is about 10-12 hrs of use before needing to be recharged, and more $$.
  • Lets start with the supplemental braking system, in CA. we have a braking performance law. In other words, you have to be able to brake in a certain distance from a specified speed. It is virtually impossible for a CHP Officer to conduct that test. So in effect "NO" you are not required to have supplemental brakes.

Now, like most here, I feel it is best and safest.

If you are going to use magnetic brake/tail lights, DO NOT purchase them from HFT. Buy a really good set from your neighborhood RV dealer or from someplace like etrailer.com.

The magnets in the base of HFT lights are very weak and if you can't leave them on top(the safest place for them), those lights will fall off the sides of the bus. In fact if you want a free set of HFT lights, I'll give one to you. In addition to the weak magnets, the umbilical cable is very short and barely fit to the back of my Sidekick which is shorter than your bus.

On posting I see you asked about which system would be best. I suggest Ready Brake. No electronics, no vacuum motor. I'm not at all sure there is enough distance from the brake pedal arm to the front of the bus, if not go with Brake Buddy or any similar system.
  • What would be the best breaking system for my set up? My toad is not listed on the new break systems.
  • You may also want to check your state laws for the lights.
Placing them on top of the bus may be to high. I believe the law requires them to be mounted a certain distance of the ground.
  • I would get a supplemental braking system to help protect your Awesome Toad. :)
  • Check your state laws, they will know if your required to have brakes on the VW bus.

Towing the VW will not harm the transaxle.

remember California requires all to do 55 MPH when towing.
  • If you had a 40' DP with air brakes, it might be able to control the VW bus without additional brakes. Since your MH is a Class C, and you're bound to throw some stuff into the van because of the room, I think you need additional brakes installed on the van.
