Many of the newer 3500 SRW Rams have GVWRs up to 12400 lbs which is well above most one ton DRW GVWR out here on the road.
However as most folks know its not GVWR that determines a trucks payload.
A particular one ton DRW with the same 12400 GVWR may have 8500-9800 RAWR for a higher payload vs a 12400 SRW with the smaller 7000-7050 RAWR and a smaller payload.
HOWEVER a higher GVWR means a higher GCW. The '13 Ram SRW with its 12400 GVWR can pull more combined (GCW) than many DRW truck on the road. This would only apply to those owners who live in a state/province that requires a GCW registration or those RV folks that use their trucks also to pull some type of combination commercially.
In the right comparison, you are correct....My 2010 Ram 3500 had a GVWR of 12,100# and a GCWR of only 24,500# and that was with the 4:10...the 2013 3500 SRW exceeds both those specs, again, comparing like trucks, (one a 3500 SRW versus 3500 Dually same config)
I too was speaking more of what you normally talk about...more about RAWR as opposed to GVWR...thus the reason I mentioned that the dually has a RAWR of 9750# versus the SRW trucks RAWR of 7,000#....
As far as a SRW Ram truck towing more than, let's say my truck, I disagree, as far as SPECS go...My truck, with the 4:10 has a GCWR of 37,500#... the SRW truck with 4:10 has a 30,000# GCWR, (7,500# is quite a bit to make up, comparing like trucks to like trucks), but again, I know GVWR and GCWR are meaningless specs, thus the reason I dealt more with RAWR's....I still believe, depending on how heavy the 5er is, that a dually will provide more stability when towing the 5er in the mountains...can't say about "flat land" because I don't do very much towing where it's flat, 95% of my towing is in the mountains, thus the reason for the 4:10 and the dually....
again, to someone else, and not JIMNLIN, I NEVER stated that a dually was "better" than a 3500 SRW...each has it's application....
ON EDIT: IF JIMNLIN is just using a generic comparison as newer 1 ton SRW trucks versus a few years older 1 ton dually's, then my post is moot and he is correct. I was comparing new to new...
