Marty, the older trucks were definitely lighter than the newer ones. 3/4-tons back in the day used Dana 60 axles, wimpy by today's standards. Now they're using heavier Dana 80's and comparable AAM versions. Axles this heavy were unheard of back then, even in a dually. Also all those electronic and automatic doo-dads all the new trucks come with now add more weight than the old bare-bones trucks from the 70's, 80's, 90's too. My '77 Chevy K20 reg cab long bed only weighed a little over 5000 lbs, and it was a Silverado trim package. Now days a reg cab long bed 4wd weighs well over 6000 lbs, and 1000 lbs more if it has a diesel... Even the 1/2-tons now days have surpassed 2000 lbs empty rear axle weight. It won't surprise me when, in another 10 years, a fully optioned diesel dually crew cab 4wd weighs close to 10,000 lbs, with an empty bed and no one inside the cab! :e
