OP - You're a new member so
First, Welcome! This is a great family of forums and members.
Next, I've been here a dozen years or so, and I can tell you Tom is one of the members you can count on for a considered and long view of things.
My own experience - Yes, lighter IS better. We've had toads weighing 2000, 2500 and 3800 pounds. 3800 is the newest one and I just equipped our 2500 for towing to get back to lighter.
I understand where some need to transport a family. Some need to adapt an existing vehicle to meet a budget. Some simply MUST have 4x4.
Cars like FIT are wonderful daily drivers. If you need to run in snow, Subarus are simply the Best, but have to be manual transmission to tow. A great compromise sits in the Honda CR-V, but the automatic canNOT be the new CVT, so you're looking for late model used. Some are AWD and still towable.
Then, if you want 4x4, want to look and actually BE sporty, don't care about space inside, there's only one: JEEP WRANGLER.
