At 65+ MPH there is absolutely no difference between tow/haul mode and normal mode. In either case, the transmission is in top gear and the torque converter is locked.
Tow/haul mode has the most effect in getting up to 65+ MPH.
Maybe taking it out of tow/haul mode in that situation hit a bug in the software?
If you're ever in that situation (again), first thing to try is pull over, shut down, and let it sit for 5 minutes.
