Towing a 2003 F150 4X4 Behind a Class A - Will it work?

I have a 2003 Ford F150 with switch on the fly 4x4. (That's an electronic shift transfer case, correct?)

The GVWR is 6,500 (5.4L/Auto)

I'm considering purchasing an Class A and want to flat tow a vehicle too.

I read on eTrailer that "Trucks prior to the 2012 model year must also have a manual-shift transfer case, as no recreational towing is permitted with vehicles with electronic-shift transfer cases."

https://www.etrailer.com/faq-best-ve...behind-rv.aspx

Is there any way to make this work so I can tow it?

    Thanks for your reply!

The specs state 4,744 lbs. It also has a topper, so a bit closer to 5,000 lbs.

What does your F150 weigh? Yes the GVWR is 6500lb, but highly unlikely that you will be towing it fully loaded. As Mike says most gas A class MH have a tow limit of 5000. I have looked at diesel pushers and seen some (Winnebago Forza in particular) that also have a tow limit of 5000lbs.

  • Check the Motorhome Magazine Dinghy Guide for 2003 vehicles that can be flat towed, then check the 2003 F150 Owner's Manual under "Towing" to see what's required. If still uncertain, check with a Ford Dealer, or send an email to Service and Customer Support @ Ford.com.
Also, 6500lbs is a bit much for a Class A motorhome - many usually come with a 5,000lb hitch and that's pretty much the limit. Unless you go to a diesel pusher, or a larger gasser with a higher hitch weight rating. A Super C could probably pull it easily, but they're not what you suggest you're in the market for.
