Same car but taller and heavier (the Explorer) has a 5,000 pound rating. The Taurus probably handles trailers better than the Explorer because of its lower CG and lower profile tires.

Except that they're both made by Ford, what do the Taurus (a sedan) and the Explorer (an "SUV") have in common?

ummm......same platform. meaning they are the same skeleton with different skin
  • I think the problem here is not engine but breaking power. You can tow it until you have an emergency situation then you're screwed. Also, nothing about the payload?

Not that I drive the perfect combination - far from it, I wish I had a 3/4 ton TV. But last year my break cable disconnected while going up and down the mountains and I did not even realize it for a long time (a truck driver kept honking so I finally decided to look what was happening).

  • I read the article. As usual some very interesting info and data from someone who has been in the towing and TV setup business for over 40 years.

I like the way he wades through the "smoke and mirrors numbers" and evaluates vehicles and combination by their technical merits. It really makes a lot of sense.

By his last sentence in the article the way the author summed up the blurb speaks volumes. Enough said;)
  • Just cause you can does not mean you should...

I'm also interested in the replies :)
  • IMHO...doesn't believe in the OEM ratings and made up their own

Goes with folks here who don't believe in their TV OEM's ratings and make up
    their own

Mainly only what they want to hear

    Again, IMHO
