Towing a GMC 2500HD silly?

I have a chance at buying a 2500 at a great price. I tow a Wrangler Unlimited now. Is it just to big?

Rig is a 42 American with 450plus HP.

Thanks

  • Not silly at all. Towing an 8000 pound truck with your coach is child's play if it's like you say, a 42 footer with a 450 hp engine. It likely is 12+ liters, has over 1500 ft./lbs of torque and similar engines move 80K+ pounds across the country every day. The caveat to this of course is making sure the tow bar and hitch are up to the task. With an air braked coach I'd look for a toad braking system that runs off the coach air brakes.
  • Depends on it's use...I usually tow a Sub. Outback, but on occasion a Chevy 3500 CC. Sometimes it is not feasible tagging that truck around, but there's nothing better when I need carrying capacity, an 8ft. bed and cab storage. Tows fine, but I am not near the limits of the coach (Super C). I have to put the transfer case in Neutral.
  • My 380HP ISC 42' Fleetwood could tow it, so I am pretty sure the American has the 10K hitch. I would even bet it has the 15K hitch. That being said, it is not silly. I tow my Wrangler and then I towed my Jeep GC that weighed in a cool 6K. No difference, just in the MPGs. The heavier GC actually tailed along nicer than the Wrangler.

If you like the truck, make it a toad. You have the coach that will do it.

what does the GMC weigh with a full tank of gas but otherwise empty? what does your MH weigh (by axle) when fully loaded for travel? in general, the maximum amount of weight you can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

    - the GCWR (gross combination weight rating) of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded for travel (includes fuel, fresh water, food, clothing, people, pets, supplies, etc.)

    - the weight rating of your tow bar

    - the weight rating of your hitch

this is why it's vital to know what your MH weighs as it is loaded and configure for travel before choosing a toad. Your MH will not collapse if it is overloaded but you will experience handling issues as well as longer braking distances and accelerated wear on suspension, brakes, steering, etc.
  • A friend, with a Prevost, tows a 3/4T Chevy diesel long bed 4X4 so he can put his Razor up on top of the truck bed and have it with him also. It also provides extra storage in the bed under the aluminum bed topper that the Razor rides on.

I tow a Jeep and prefer it now that we got rid of the rear seat in it.

  • if its a great price, buy it and flip it... strong demand for used pickups right now.
  • I thought about towing my Dodge Ram 2500 diesel until I weighed it.
It turns out to be about a ton too heavy for the motorhome hitch, and half a ton (plus a little) too heavy for my towbar.
A couple hundred pounds too heavy I wouldn't worry about, but that is a little much!
go get the truck weighed. The numbers might surprise you.
  • Too big? Maybe not. Foolish to tow it? Probably. It all depends on how much towing capacity your MH has.
