towing all 4 wheels down

I have a 2003 Madza Miata 5 speed manual transmission. I have been told you can not tow vehicle with all 4 wheels down because you will damage the vehicle. Is that the truth.Dan

I was surprised to see more than one page in the 2013 Chevy Sonic manual devoted to dingy towing (and a bit to dolly towing) and they even used those words. The manufacturers (GM at least) are aware that towing their cards by RVs is becoming a common thing. But all cars usually have a section describing general towing and how it should be done.

  • Danny71,

    I towed a 2000 Miata 5-speed over 35,000 miles.

I know several Miata NB owners who have towed their 5 speeds over 50,000 miles with no damage due to that towing.

    I then towed a 2010 Miata 6 speed over 16,000 miles

And this past weekend, I finished installing a towing baseplate on my 2012 Miata 6-speed.

In the past 7 years, I have helped more than 50 other Miata owners (many are still on this forum) to get their Miatas towable.

PM me if you want more information on equipment and processes to tow your 2003 Miata behind your RV.

  • Many manual transmissions are built in such a way that the rear bearing, center main shaft bearings, and output seal will get no lubrication if the input shaft is not turning. When being towed, only the output shaft is turning.
Damage may occur due to lack of lubrication. It may take a while, but eventually the bearings and seal will be damaged.
I don't know if the Mazda 5 speed manual transmission will lubricate itself when being towed or not.
Some people have stated that they have towed their Miatas many miles.
    How lucky do you feel?
  • Open glove box.
    Pull out owners manual.
    Look for recreational towing chapter.

It will STATE right in the manual if that car has to be towed on a dolly or can be towed 4 down.

It's been my personal experience to NEVER ask the dealership and/or salesman if they 'think' the car can be towed 4-down unless they can show it to you "in the manual" for that car. :W
  • I think that I would ask the Mazda dealer and then have him show me in writing where it says that you can or cannot tow 4 down. JMO
