Towing Areodynamics

I asked this same question in the TT section, but thought I might be able to get some insight in the towing section.

I have been looking at TT till my head spins. One thing I have notices is some TT have a pretty much "flat" or vertical from (ie the Rockwood Signature) vs a TT with a "curved" front like the Bullet.

Has anyone have any experience towing both types - "flat" and "curved" and if you could tell me is there really a difference with the curved front.

I am interested in towability, handling, stability, etc.

  • I had an older TT with the typical large flat frontal area. I now have an Airstream that is longer and heavier than my old TT. I get better gas mileage towing my Airstream and it tows much more stable. Aerodynamics is a major factor when it comes to gas mileage. I have a friend that got better mileage towing a 10,500# Sabre fiver than he did towing a 5500# Jayco TT. Arodynamics.
  • The difference in aerodynamics from trailer to trailer is not enough to net you any considerable savings in fuel. Your money would be better spent buying what you are comfortable using or living in. The speeds that we tow, you would be better off buying a trailer based on weight, there would be more money savings due to pulling weig around...

  • The only two trailers that IMO would offer good aerodynamics in a large size would be an Airstream and an Evergreen Element. The rest would be marginal. Tiny trailers like the Scamp or maybe a Big Foot would offer some better mpg because they're rounded and small. Less wind drag down the sides and a better coefficient drag from the rear.
  • I have a Forest River Flagstaff V-Lite. I didn't buy it for its shape. I bought it for the interior layout and the overall quality of the unit. I don't see that the v shape saves me gas.....8mpg. Nor does it seem to tow differently than anything else. I use a Henley Arrow hitch. That makes all things equal in the handling envronment. So I second "downtheroad' advice. Buy what you like.
  • ....and I'll answer it the same way I did in your duplicate thread:

Get the one that has the floor plan that will work best for you.

Don't worry too much about the outside shape...and don't let a dealer tell you that this shape or that shape will tow better or get better mileage.
  • Just a note, according to the rules here, your not supposed to ask the same question in multiple forums.
