This is the correct answer. Not only are permits only good for defined periods, you have to get them at the port of entry for each state, and the DO NOT TRANSFER to other states.
The other factor is most states will not issue over-length permits for a "divisible combination". I.e. if you can unhitch, you have to unhitch. Otherwise every trucking company would just keep on running triple trailers everywhere. That said, it appears Idaho at least will issue over-length permits with few restrictions.
