Towing Geo Tracker 2 WD 4 down

Is anyone doing this? I have a 1995 Geo Tracker that I bought to tow, however, reading the Manual it states that towing will cause damage to the transmission. I know the previous two owners towed this vehicle 4 down for many, many miles.
Your comments will be appreciated.

PS, Manual 5 speed transmission.

    Thanks for asking, I added a PS stating it was Manual 5 speed.
