I averaged a little over 9mpg with my '07 Tundra towing a 31' 7600lbs trailer. Truck was lifted with 305/55/20 AT tires, TRD dual exhaust and K&N filter. I wouldn't recommend the exhaust or filter.
Turn off the cruise control which is a fuel sucker and drop 5mph and you'll see 9+mpg
It has excellent gearing (4.30s stock) for towing, just not good for mileage. Yes, they can suffer from low payload, as with most 1/2 tons, but the drivetrain is a bullet proof tow beast. That old Tundra pulled my trailer better than my current 2014 Ram 2500.

They have horrible gear ratios, especially for towing. They do OK for hauling families and light loads, but not trailers. 8 sounds about right.
