Turn off the cruise control which is a fuel sucker and drop 5mph and you'll see 9+mpgThey have horrible gear ratios, especially for towing. They do OK for hauling families and light loads, but not trailers. 8 sounds about right.
It has excellent gearing (4.30s stock) for towing, just not good for mileage. Yes, they can suffer from low payload, as with most 1/2 tons, but the drivetrain is a bullet proof tow beast. That old Tundra pulled my trailer better than my current 2014 Ram 2500.
Yea, I do actually know what of I speak. Kids have/had two newer Tundras. Nice ride, but absolutely no real world towing ability. Once you load a family and 4000 pounds worth of trailer they are at their limits.
Heck, my dually pulling a 13,500 pound fiver gets 11.5MPG all day at 65-70 MPH.
