8.1L 4.10 gears in a Suburban pulling 7500+ lbs (have not weighed it but I"m sure we're pushing the 7800-7900 GVWR). The longest trip we've taken so far with this combination of TV and Trailer was to Maine and back. Got 7.5 mpg overall with tanks ranging from 6.4-9.0. I usually drive with the cruise set at 65 mph. Our trailer is not aerodynamic looking at all. It is fairly upright in the front and sits as tall as any travel trailer. We towed it with my parents 2006 Duramax 2500HD last year for 4600 miles and got closer to 10 mpg driving 67 most of the time. Can't beat a diesel for quiet cruising and good fuel economy.
We just took a 1800 mile trip for spring break and did NOT take the trailer. Just a loaded up suburban, nothing on the roof rack. 5 mph over the speed limit most of the time. Averaged 12.4 mpg. Got my best ever tank since I've owned this vehicle on this trip. 13.2 mpg. Any 8.1L is not known for good fuel economy, but it is not out of the norm when towing.
