Towing MPG???

Hi,

So what do you get for mpg towing? I have a 7000 pound, 29 foot travel trailer. It is probably about 7500 loaded. With my 2012 Tundra Rock Warrior I get a little under 8 mpg. This is pretty bad. My only mods are a TRD dual exhaust and TRD drop in air filter (K&N style).

It seems I l got a bit better before the mods. I am going to try going back to the OEM filter to see if that makes a difference.

The last couple of times I towed it was on rolling hills in Oklahoma...relatively flat, using cruise control at 63mph.

I have read where people claim 9-10 mpg. I just find that hard to believe given my experience.

What is your experience and what do you find helps?

thanks
Matt

  • 2010 Ram 3500 4x4 SRW megacab 6.7 Cummins 4.10 ratio towing Keystone Alpine 39' at 13.5 k lbs from northern CA to Houston and back overall mpg 11.7. Only mods a K&N air filter and oversize tranny pan. Trip to Ft Bragg in the hills and mpg about 9.8. Hills and headwinds will eat the fuel mileage. With our rig we travel 60 to 62 mph which seems to be the best speed for best mpg.
  • Not really comparable, but 10.6 MPG from California to Florida towing a 13,375 lb. (scale weighed) fifth wheel with a Duramax Diesel. That includes coming over the Sierras, the mountains in Arizona, the far southern Rockies, etc.

  • 9500 lb DRW diesel truck towing a 14k lb 5th wheel ranges from 9 to 11+ MPG depending.
  • we drive 60-62 mph tops. MPG is 7-8.

But price of gas has dropped. No one said camping is a cheap hobby
  • Air filter is probably the WORST downgrade you could have made.
Now, Tundras are not noted for good fuel mileage to start with. They have horrible gear ratios, especially for towing. They do OK for hauling families and light loads, but not trailers. 8 sounds about right.
