Towing with FWD GMC Acadia

My in-laws recently bought a small Apex Nano TT. TV is a 2015 Acadia - FWD only, which I didn't realize until today.

Got a VM from my father in law panicked that his tires are spinning all over the place on wet pavement. I told him to put it in 4WD and he told me they don't have it. Shocked.

OK, Plan B. I told him to adjust the WDH to put a bit more weight back on the front axle. Is that suitable advice? Anything else he can do to help with traction in a FWD SUV?

Thanks!

That and the price is why I went 1 generation older and grabbed a low mileage Envoy Denali with the 5.3 V8 and auto leveling rear air suspension. It won't tow like my trucks, but I have dragged an open deck trailer with my Z06 and a rented 4000# camper with no issues.
  • What Apex Nano model do they have? How good are his tires?

My wife towed a fully loaded 16’ U-haul trailer 800 miles with a 2016 Traverse (FWD) and in the rain half of that time and didn’t have any issues. That was also crossing the Smokey Mountains. Based on what was loaded in the trailer and how, I know that we were pretty close to the limits on tongue weight.

  • When he shops, make sure the AWD system he is looking at can send 100% torque to the rear wheels. Many don't, and some are almost as bad as just having FWD.
  • Thank you! He does have a WDH. I just hope he adjusts it the right way. I tried to explain it but not being there I can’t confirm. He should be able to do it.

They’re already looking at new TVs.
  • Yes, good advice, hopefully he has a WDH! While returning more wt will help, a better choice of TV may be in his future.
