To bad GM doesn't want to spend the R&D to upgrade the old Rat Motors.
My 96 7.4L has 410 ft/lb torque & 290 HP, but limited to about 3.8K RPM. The 8.1L/496 inch cubic inches of displacement, is rated between 320 to 340 horsepower and 440 to 455 lb-ft of torque depending on the model year.
Torque which isn't must different than the new Ford 7.3L : Horsepower is 430 at 5500 rpm, with 475 pound-feet of torque cresting at 4000 rpm
Think if GM decided to redesign the heads for direct injection and up the valve train to be rated to around 4.5K-5K RPM, it would match or exceed the Ford 7.3L
Toss in compression ignition, cam and it would be a screamer like my old L88.
Plus, think (more hope than anything) it might not be that dirty of an engine smog wise
But...GM hasn't seen enough demand to spend the bucks to to that...now if an independent would come out with an upgrade kit...I'd be instantly in line
