............ or the pin keeping the ball mount in place failed / fell out / was taken by some idiot who thought it would be funny.
It happened to a friend a few years back. When he went in to pay for his fuel some key do at the next fuel island pulled the pin as they were leaving. Luckily the sharp-eyed attendant saw it. Thankfully another customer gave him a pin and he was on his way safely.
