Just for comparison I saw a 3/4 or 1 ton srw Ford long bed sc or crew cab jack knifed up on the guard rail of I-65 south of US-50. It was still hitched sway bars and all to a TT of at least 32'. I know no details of what happened. Bad stuff happens.
Yes, bad things happen. As I said in a previous comment, I (we all) are just speculating because none of us know the actual facts. But I believe most of us will agree that the accident was a result of inexperience, ignorance (of all the dynamics of towing a TT), or poor decision making...or a combination thereof. I have seen way too many rigs passing me with improperly setup hitches and/or with tow vehicles either pushing the limits or just plain inadequate. I live in the west where we have highways with steep grades and a lot of curves which just compounds these issues. It appears that many RV owners throw a WD Hitch on their rig without bothering to read the instructions and they have no clue that there is actually a setup procedure involved. Not to mention checking the capacity of their factory Hitch receiver. Little do they know you can actually tow all they way up to the speed limit and without being white knuckled the whole trip.......if you take the time and spend the money to be safe.
